Hiring a car can sometimes be a confusing experience as there are many things that you need to be aware of in order to make sure that you fully understand what you are paying for and what you will recieve when you collect or have your hire vehicle delivered to you.
Our aim at Nationwide is to make the process as transparent and painless as possible and so we have prepared this collection of frequently asked questions to make sure that you fully understand both the process and our procedures.
What ID do I need to show when collecting a vehicle?
All drivers must show their Current valid Driving Licence for inspection at time of vehicle collection. We may also be able to check your details with the DVLA direct if you have lost or misplaced your Driving Licence however an additional charge of £7.50 will apply for this.
If you have an old paper style license then this must be shown and checked for endorsements & convictions and produced along with a Passports or New card style – Must be present with paper counterpart to check for endorsements & convictions.
Is there any other form of identification required?
We must also see TWO other forms of identification these can be any of the below:
- Full Passport
- Household Utility Bill [Address to match Driving Licence address]
- Bank Statement [Address to match Driving Licence]
- Credit Card Statement [Address to match Driving Licence]
- Police / Armed Forces ID card
- If the address displayed on your Drivers Licence is not that of your residential address you should be advised to update your details with the DVLA.
Paying for Your Hire Vehicle
When Do I Pay for My Hire Vehicle?
Payment is taken for the hire at the time when the vehicle is collected from our branch or delivered to your location.
What Payment Methods Do You Accept?
We accept all Major credit cards and Visa Debit cards providing the numbers are raised. We will under no circumstances accept any type of pre-paid cards, cash or cheque.
Do You Take a Deposit?
We may ask you to pay a deposit to cover any supplementary charges you may incur as part of your rental, e.g. damage, penalties, fuel etc.
Amending Your Hire
Can I amend the hire details after I have placed a booking?
It is possible to change or modify your reservation at any time subject to availability. We would appreciate it if you could contact our reservation staff on 0113-2798999 or firstname.lastname@example.org at the earliest possible time, and we will advise if there is a cancellation or amendment fee that will apply.
Can I cancel the hire once it has been made?
If cancellations are made more than 24 hours before your booking is due to start then you can cancel at no charge. If you fail to cancel before this point or you fail to collect the car we will charge £25.00 directly to your supplied debit/credit card.
Can I extend the hire if I want to keep a vehicle for longer?
You can extend your rental at any time and the appropriate charges for the extended rental period will be advised and applied to the card you supplied when making the reservation.
What happens if I need to return the vehicle early?
We do not offer a refund for unused rental days and so we advise you to carefully consider how long you will require the vehicle and where possible book for a shorter period and extend the hire if necessary.
About the Hire Vehicle
Am I guaranteed to receive a specific model?
Unfortunately we cannot guarantee the make and model of your vehicle as vehicles are reserved on a group basis. However an alternative vehicle will be provided that is in the same category that you originally booked.
If at any stage we cannot provide an alternative vehicle in the same category then we reserve the right to upgrade you to the next available standard category and our reservations team will inform you immediately.
Will the vehicle be provided with fuel?
We operate on an empty to empty basis, however in the circumstances that the vehicle provided does have fuel in then we ask that the when the hire ends the fuel levels are the same.
Current fuel levels are shown on the rental agreement at the time of collection and will be signed off on return. If the vehicle is returned with less fuel then a fuel charge will apply. We do not refund any unused fuel, so consider your fuelling requirements carefully.
What happens if I lose the key?
Due to the cost, and time implications of replacing keys, If lost, you will be required to pay for a replacement, plus any associated costs. Most importantly, you may be affected while you wait for the new key to be prepared and delivered.
What if I get any parking fines etc?
Nationwide Car Hire UK Ltd have the right to cover all costs from the method of payment you used when collecting the vehicle if we incur penalties for parking illegally, speeding, congestion zone charges etc, and there will also be an administration fee applicable on all occasions.
What is the Criteria Required to Drive a Vehicle?
All drivers must be aged between 25 and 75 years of age with 2 years full driving experience.
All drivers must have held a full UK, European, or International Driving Licence for at least 2 years. There is a charge of 50% of the insurance tariff for none European licence holders,
There should be no more than 6 valid points on your Driving Licence, whilst we are able to hire to customers with some Driving Licence endorsements on their Licence; there are certain endorsements, which due to insurance restrictions will restrict our ability to supply a vehicle. We can supply to customers with up to 3 penalty points for speeding and we can also accommodate some road traffic offences .there is a loading of 50% on the insurance tariff

- Drivers using the vehicle for carrying of passengers for hire or reward
- Using the vehicle for towing of any kind
- Driving with the following occupation Foreign Armed Forces, Entertainers, Sports professionals
- No Cover in any circumstances for the following endorsements:- UT, CD 40 – CD71 , DD40, DD80
- No Cover for 5 years from date of conviction for AC10 – AC30, BA10-BA30, DR10-DR90,TT99, CD10-CD30, MS50 & MS90 OR ANY ^ MONTH DISQUAL
- For IN10 No cover for 5 years from the date of conviction.
Note for speeding convictions or mobile phone offences within the last 4 years (Conviction date) A CU 80 is treated as an SP code
One SP Endorsement Accepted
Two SP Codes Raise the Excess by a Min of £50
Vehicles can be covered for the following countries Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France , Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.
Is There an Insurance Excess
There is an excess on all vehicles supplied by Nationwide Car Hire UK Ltd this is to cover the cost of any damage, loss of use, or theft of the vehicle during the rental period. The excess is displayed on each individual vehicle on the booking page, as this does vary depending upon the type and value of the vehicle.
A reduction on the excess may be possible at the descretion of Nationwide Car Hire UK Ltd and our insurers at an additional cost. Excess waivers are only available at the commencement of the hire and not after the start. In event of any of the above the full excess will be taken, and then after repairs etc have been valued the difference will be refunded if at all there is any difference.
All personal items that are in the rental vehicle are at your own risk, as Nationwide Car Hire UK Ltd will not accept any liability for these as Nationwide Car Hire UK Ltd does not cover loss or damage to possessions.We strongly recommend that you take out separate insurance cover to cater for this risk. Remember never leave valuables on show when leaving the car hire unattended.
Can Anyone Else Be Insured to Drive the Vehicle?
It is possible to cover additional drivers however all drivers must meet the all of the criteria and surcharges will apply.Only drivers added to your rental and named on the insurance are able to drive the vehicle by law for insurance purposes. All drivers must be present at the start of the rental.
Can the Vehicle Be Taken Out Of The United Kingdom?
FOREIGN TRAVEL – we will happily issue a ‘Green Card’ for the following countries – you will need to provide at least 48 hours notice for this.
